Through Our Eyes 2023

The Journeys in Journalism Advisory Committee supports three Pinellas County Schools magnet programs. The programs were established in 2001 in partnership with the Tampa Bay Times. Students in Journeys in Journalism range from kindergarten to grade 12 as a collaborative effort between Melrose Elementary (journalism/multimedia magnet), John Hopkins Middle (Center for Journalism and Multimedia), and Lakewood High School (Center for Journalism and Multimedia). These programs equip students with the critical skills of media literacy, writing, inquiry, and communication across multiple informational platforms. Students are prepared to be informed citizens no matter what career choice they choose.

The annual photojournalism exhibition fundraiser Through Our Eyes opens January 13, 2023 with the theme of “Taking Action”. Proceeds from the sales of student produced photos and bids from the silent auction at Studio@620 will go to support the funding of the various aspects of the Journeys in Journalism program. Donations and grants assist in: continued student participation in state and countrywide journalism memberships and competitions; opportunities to take trips into the surrounding Tampa Bay community for real-world experiences; purchase updated equipment for students to keep current with industry trends and needs; growing the video broadcast and podcast studios on each campus. In addition, funds raised will be allocated for the two scholarships offered by the Journeys in Journalism program in conjunction with Pinellas Education Foundation. These scholarships are offered to graduates that are participating in the Center for Journalism and Multimedia within Lakewood High School. Scholarship recipients are committed to all aspects of journalism and continuing their education after graduation. More information can be found below.

The opening weekend’s events include the January 13th opening night and January 14th St. Pete Art Walk and silent auction. Information for giving to the program is located via the QR code below or by visiting the Pinellas Education Foundation donation page. Gifts can be designated for Journeys in Journalism in its entirety, specifically for a Journeys in Journalism program school, or to the scholarship funds by filling out the designee field on the website (e.g., Journeys in Journalism Lakewood High, Peggy Peterman Book Scholarship, etc.)
